Steamy breath came from the jaws of a tired wolf. After miles of screaming winds raining ice shards upon her pelt, the fea was exhausted. Her large paws dragged and slid on the ice, nails grinding its slippery surface. Her breathing was loud and ragged, although it could hardly be heard over the howling wind. Reddish brown colored fur blew in all directions, and it masked her face. A sudden gust of wind blew the fur out of her dazzling green eyes, and once again, she could see. The wolf, Karei, snorted frost out of her nostrils and shook her head.
She paused her lengthy trek in the snow, and her limbs shook dangerously. Karei tightly shut her eyes and almost faded out of existence as her bodily functions drew upon her strength. Opening her eyes again, the fea discovered a small opening in a few rocks, leading to a warm shelter. Calling upon the rest of her strength, the wolf dragged her numbed limbs towards the shelter. “Only a few more steps” she told her broken body and weary spirit. Karei slipped and fell with an inaudible thud to the ground. Her vision became unfocused, and she started to black out.
A sharp pain in Karei’s side saved her from certain death. Slowly, she turned her snow-matted face to see what had caused her pain. Her vision grew dull, and nothing appeared to be there. Groaning, the fea slowly climbed back up onto her paws, but when she breathed in deeply, pain seared her side. Karei cried out, not wanting to move any more. After a few more painful seconds, she gained control of her resistant body and moved it to the opening in the rocks. Suddenly, she stood before the opening, and crawled into the small shelter, wincing as another flash of pain came from her side. Once inside, she lay there, sides heaving and tongue hanging. After a few more minutes of panting, she dragged herself further into the cave, dropped her heavy head onto numb paws, and closed her stinging eyes.
